Samsung is the most prominent market holder for supplying smartphone companies with their displays. In the case of Apple, Samsung provides Apple it’s OLED panels for its iPhones. And with the upcoming iPhone X Samsung is planning to make a considerable profit. It may be paining Apple to see it’s most significant competitor earning from their phones. And so they might have decided to partner with LG for their future foldable iPhone Display needs. Furthermore, LG is making quite remarkable progress in its flexible circuits technology. They have potential to do something unique and partnering with Apple might give them a heads up for getting ahead in the race.
According to Investor – which quoted The Bell, till 2020 LG might become the company to supply OLED panels to Apple instead of Samsung. It will be no surprise to see them work together as LG has been a long time LCD supplier to Apple.
Apple is considering to invest in LG’s new plant to speed up the production of such OLED panels so that it can start its production of foldable iPhones as soon as possible. But given the time, Samsung is expected to get ahead in the race as it is already going to unveil its first foldable smartphone The Samsung galaxy X by the end of 2017 or early 2018. Apple is expected to come up with its foldable iPhone very late in 2020 though it is not certain. It will be interesting to see Apple’s take on foldable phones. The company has been consistently doing good in bringing new features to its phones with lots of time dedicated to its research and development area.
With technology developing every day, we might be seeing more companies approaching the foldable smartphone design concept. It would be very interesting to see what other companies do in this field.
