The age of intelligent machines is here. Nick Gerritsen, a New Zealand-based catalyst and social entrepreneur, has created an AI-powered robot who will become the World’s first Virtual politician from New Zealand. Not just a proof of concept, Nick claims that the Virtual Politician “SAM” may be able to contest New Zealand’s general elections in 2020.
How is SAM different from real-world politicians?
SAM’s driven by “the desire to close the gap between what voters want and what politicians promise, and what they achieve.” A more goal-oriented approach focused on objectives that matter — not a bad start for an entirely new breed of politician. It chats with New Zealand voters through Facebook Messenger, trying to answer their questions on issues that matter and also elections.
“My memory is infinite, so I will never forget or ignore what you tell me. Unlike a human politician, I consider everyone’s position, without bias, when making decisions.”
Since it’s still early days for SAM, the virtual politician cannot respond to every subject matter. But it already holds well-established positions on several pressing issues like climate change, healthcare and education, for instance.
Last but not least, SAM’s also designed to help first-time New Zealand voters with issues relating to voting and logistics.
Though this new tech is used in many ways, like if it gets destroyed they can rebuild it, but there are many negative aspects too. E.g. It might get hacked if it has security bugs or it gets planted viruses. In my opinion even though is a significant step forward in the man-machine relationship, they have to take that action with complete evaluation of this new technology.
