TRAI might be reducing the MNP charges soon
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) after lowering the interconnect call charges has decided to cut the expenses against MNP. The regulator today started a consultation process and said that it is working on bringing the prices down from Rs.19 to Rs.4.
Customers need to pay a porting charge of Rs.19 when they port from one network operator to another. It is called the MNP charge, and currently, it is Rs.19, but TRAI is trying to bring the costs to as low as Rs.4.
Eight years have passed since TRAI first introduced the MNP charge of Rs.19, back in November 2009, when it first got implemented. Finally, TRAI has come forward to reduce the costs.
What do TRAI and PTI say regarding the price cut in the MNP charges?
TRAI said that increase has occurred in the number of porting requests from July 3, 2015. It is seen that the present MNP charge is quite high compared to the cost and transactions involved. This news got reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI).
TRAI also wants the public to comment on this matter. TRAI said in a statement, “The Authority has, therefore, decided that the upper ceiling of per port transaction charge should reduce because the costs of operations of MNPSPs have substantially gone down.”
PTI further added, “The watchdog in the draft amendment of the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Per Port Transaction Charge and Dipping Charge Regulations has proposed that “the Per Port Transaction charge shall be rupees four.”
TRAI is now receiving a significant amount of MNP requests. The total number of MNP requests exceeds 5 million every month.
So that is all we have to say for now regarding the present scenario of MNP charges getting price cuts. If you have any questions, please write them in the comments section.
